School Lunch Notes: Supporting Kids Without Food Pressure

School lunch is about more than what comes home in the lunchbox.

For some children, lunchtime is short, loud, distracting, socially exciting, or sensory-overwhelming. Adding pressure to finish food, eat foods in a certain order, or take “just one more bite” can make an already complicated part of the school day even harder.

That’s why TLB Nutrition Therapy created two free School Lunch Notes that parents and caregivers can send to school with their child.

Traditional School Lunch Note

Our traditional lunch note is designed for families practicing a food-neutral and body-trust approach. It lets teachers, aides, and school staff know that your child is encouraged to listen to their own hunger and fullness cues.

The note asks that children not be pressured to:

  • Finish everything in their lunch

  • Eat foods in a particular order

  • Take additional bites after saying they are full

Some days kids eat more. Some days they eat less. The goal is to give children space to listen to their bodies while supporting a positive, lifelong relationship with food.

Neurodivergent & Sensory-Aware School Lunch Note

We also created a version specifically for neurodivergent children and children who experience sensory differences around food.

For these kiddos, lunchtime can involve much more than hunger. Sensory preferences, predictability, food safety, anxiety, environmental stimulation, and what feels manageable that particular day can all influence eating.

This version asks school staff to use a responsive, pressure-free approach, allowing the child to honor their hunger, fullness, and sensory cues without being required to try or finish foods. It also asks staff to bring concerns about intake directly to the parent or caregiver rather than discussing them with the child.

The goal isn't to create a “perfect” lunch.

It's to help lunchtime feel safe, predictable, supportive, and free from unnecessary pressure.

Both notes include space to add parent or caregiver contact information so school staff can reach out with questions or concerns.
