Nutrition advice is everywhere, and it often comes with rigid rules, conflicting opinions, and promises of the "perfect" way to eat. At TLB Nutrition Therapy, we believe that nutrition is much simpler than diet culture makes it seem.

Our General Nutrition Basics handout focuses on building sustainable habits instead of following strict rules. Rather than striving for perfection, we encourage balanced meals that include carbohydrates, protein, fat, and colorful fruits and vegetables, consistent eating throughout the day, regular snacks, hydration, and gentle variety over time. Nutrition is about supporting your body—not controlling it.

The handout also reminds us that food serves many purposes beyond physical nourishment. Food can bring connection, culture, comfort, celebration, and enjoyment. Alongside nutrition, factors like sleep, stress management, movement, social connection, and access to resources all influence our overall health. These pieces work together to support wellbeing in a way that is individualized and sustainable.

Whether you're just beginning your nutrition journey or looking to step away from food rules, returning to the basics can help build a more balanced and compassionate relationship with food.

General Nutrition Basics

Nutrition doesn't have to be confusing. In this episode of Snack Chats, TLB Team Lead Dietitians Ana and Marcie answer some of the most common nutrition questions they hear from clients while breaking down nutrition through a food- and weight-neutral lens.

Whether you're new to nutrition counseling or simply looking to better understand how to nourish your body without rigid food rules, this conversation provides practical, compassionate guidance that can help you build a more sustainable relationship with food.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • What a balanced and varied eating pattern actually looks like

  • How often to eat throughout the day to support energy

  • Why there isn't one "best" way of eating for everyone

  • The truth about "good" and "bad" foods

  • Signs you may not be eating enough

  • How food influences energy, mood, and concentration

  • Why snacks are an important part of meeting your nutrition needs

  • How hydration, movement, sleep, stress, and social connection all support overall health

  • Why nutrition should be flexible, individualized, and sustainable

Ana and Marcie emphasize that nutrition isn't about perfection—it's about finding an approach that supports your body, your lifestyle, and your overall wellbeing. By focusing on balance instead of restriction, you can build habits that feel realistic and enjoyable for the long term.
